Also recorded during this time was Adams' first single, " Let Me Take You Dancing," which made the Canadian RPM chart in March 1979 (the b-side was entitled "Don't Turn Me Away"). Both songs were covered by other artists even before his first album was released. Some of the first demos written in 1978 have surfaced over the years, most notably "I'm Ready" (recorded for both the album Cuts Like a Knife and later his release for MTV Unplugged) and "Remember," which was recorded on his first album. Not long afterwards he signed with them as a recording artist for the sum of one dollar. Later that year the Adams-Vallance songwriting team was signed by A&M, although Bryan was not yet signed as a recording artist. It proved to be successful so they forged a songwriting team, Adams-Vallance. They agreed to a trial songwriting session at Vallance's home studio a few days later. They both admitted they liked the idea of songwriting teams such as Lennon-MacCartney and Jagger-Richards. Adams revealed to Vallance that, in addition to being a performer, he is also an avid songwriter. ![]() Consequently, he was in search of an artist to perform his songs. He had recently quit the band to focus on a career strictly as a professional songwriter. Vallance was the former drummer and principal songwriter for Vancouver based rock band Prism. The two were introduced by a mutual friend in a Vancouver music store both happened to be visiting that day. In 1978, at the age of 18, Adams met Jim Vallance and, together, they formed a songwriting partnership, Adams-Vallance. His auditioning landed him a few jobs, and he quit school to play nightclubs with bands like Shock and later with Sweeney Todd, who released If Wishes Were Horses with the 15-year-old Adams as lead singer. Adams was selected to be the temporary singer until they found a proper singer, but they never found one. Music career Early careerīetween the age of 14-15 Adams worked as a dishwasher to get enough money to buy a Fender guitar, and quit the job once he had it and he started auditioning as a guitarist while rehearsing his own band in his mother's rented basement in Vancouver. Finally in 1973, Adams' family returned to Canada to settle in Vancouver, British Columbia. He traveled extensively through his parents' native England, as well as a year in Tel Aviv, Israel, four years in Cascais, Portugal situated close to Lisbon, and a year in Vienna, Austria. Most of his youth was spent growing up between his father's diplomatic postings in Europe and the Middle East. As Adams' father was a British diplomat, Adams grew up travelling around the world with his parents. From his grandmother, he also inherited a Maltese ancestry. Adams was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada to English parents. ![]()
